Double Up Food Bucks: A win for families & communities
The Double Up Food Bucks program in Monterey County doubles the value of federal nutrition benefits so that families and individuals participating in CalFresh can bring home even more fresh fruits and vegetables. The program has broad benefits: It makes healthy food more affordable for low-income families and individuals, supports economic development through grocery stores, and increases demand for California grown produce.
The Double Up Food Bucks program launched in California in February 2017. It is based on a model pioneered by the Fair Food Network in Michigan in 2009 and is similar to other healthy food incentive programs in California and across the country.
Since then, the program has significantly expaneded, evolving into a nationally recognized initiative. Today, it proudly serves as an available option for Cal Fresh recipients in Monterey County, offered by participating grocers and administered by Aspire Health in partnership with Blue Zones Project Monterey County and SPUR.
